Capital allocators play a pivotal role in shaping the future of responsible innovation. This is why Project Liberty Institute engages with investors alongside policymakers, technologists, business leaders, users, and leading experts to build better frameworks for a fairer data economy—one where people have more voice, choice, and stake in their digital future.
Building on this commitment, in partnership with VentureESG, Project Liberty Institute is proud to announce an official side event at the upcoming AI Action Summit 2025 in Paris. The event, “The Future of Responsible VC Investing and AI & Data: A Transatlantic LP Perspective,” will take place on February 11, 2025, at Station F, the world’s largest startup incubator, as part of the Summit’s international Business Day facilitated by France’s state investment fund BPIfrance and France Digitale, France’s leading tech association.
The AI Action Summit 2025, hosted by the French Government at the Grand Palais in Paris, France, will bring together Heads of State and Government, international organization leaders, CEOs, academics, NGO representatives, artists, and civil society members. This high-level gathering aims to shape the future of AI across five primary themes: Public Interest AI, Future of Work, Innovation and Culture, Trust in AI, and Global Governance of AI.
This official side event builds upon Project Liberty Institute’s recent release of “Towards a Fair Data Economy: A Blueprint for Innovation and Growth” and represents a crucial step in implementing its recommendations. As Frank McCourt, Founder of Project Liberty, highlighted, “The digital revolution promised opportunity for all. Instead, we’ve witnessed the unprecedented concentration of our data and power in the hands of a few. It’s time to start building the digital future we all deserve.”
A Groundbreaking Transatlantic LP Initiative
Since March 2024, Project Liberty Institute and VentureESG in collaboration with Omidyar Network, have led a pioneering transatlantic dialogue engaging over 50 institutional Limited Partners (LPs)—the pension funds, endowments, state funds, and other institutions that provide capital to venture capital firms—across the EU, UK, the United States and Canada. This initiative leverages VentureESG’s extensive community of 400 venture capital firms and 100 limited partners and focuses on developing responsible investing principles for the data and AI sectors.
The initiative combines insights from in-person LP meetings we jointly convened in London, New York, and Paris throughout 2024, a comprehensive online LP survey, and 26 in-depth institutional investor interviews on current and emerging approaches to responsible investment and specific practices and frameworks for data and AI.
At the Paris event, we will unveil a pivotal White Paper presenting the first baseline overview of responsible investment approaches of top LPs with a specific deep dive on data and AI, synthesizing key insights from these extensive engagements.
“Limited Partners are at the top of the innovation ecosystem pyramid by capitalizing the funds that invest in the next generation of the digital economy. They are uniquely positioned to drive systemic change in how we build and deploy AI and data technologies. Through this pioneering transatlantic dialogue with VentureESG and Omidyar Network, we are helping institutional investors develop concrete frameworks for responsible innovation,” said Paul Fehlinger, Director of Policy, Governance Innovation & Impact at Project Liberty Institute. “This initiative directly contributes to implementing our Fair Data Economy Task Force’s recommendations on strategic capital allocation to build a better digital future for all.”
